Harriet sent a check to Mr. M for the pictures sold at the concert at the Garden City Hotel. Refers to red-tape problems with benefit concerts. Hoping that the rest at Annie Schunelz house has been good. Asks if Mr. M would give any more concerts like the one in Virginia and discusses arrangements. Mr. Wells would be glad to assist. Mr. And Mrs. Trino came to visit and wished rfthe Markhams were their too.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
